Taiwan is known for outstanding bicycle manufacturing quality, and praised as a “Bike Kingdom”. As lockdowns are lifted in some parts of the world, many people are eager to explore outdoors. While Giant and Merida offers bikes to all market segments, another Taiwanese bike brand DARE targets high-end customers. With many design awards in his pocket, DARE Branding Manager William Wang explains how it delivers quality, value, and performance in carbon fiber bikes.
Design ideal bikes in mind
Founded in 2012, DARE was a risky venture in a competitive market, Even with manufacturing experiences for top European and American brands, “it was dangerous to start a brand when market bubbles started to burst,” said Wang. However, it forced them to identify brand advantages clearly.
With passion in biking, Jerry Chen launched the brand to fill market gaps he identified. Later, he invited bike designer William Wang back to Taiwan to design their ideal products with unconventional carbon fiber frames.
DARE integrates design and aesthetics into carbon fiber bikes, with no compromises on performance. “DARE only produces best-in-class products,” Wang says confidently. Designed without limitations in mind, DARE always aspires to offer a “Real Ride” just like its manifesto.
Creativity and design, recognized by design awards
Unlike commuter bikes, all DARE models are made with carbon fibers. Innovative styles and sophisticated coatings are well received by bikers.
In recent years, its quality and appearance have been widely celebrated in iF, Red Dot, Golden Pin, DFA, and other design awards. For example, VSRu won Best Design at 2020 Golden Pin Design Award, as they secured the same title for the third year in a row.
Skeek, beautiful, and practical, VSRu features the exclusive “detachable fairings”. Fairing design can effectively reduce wind resistance by calipers for optimal speed. All cable routings are integrated into the carbon fiber frame for a streamlined profile. The whole design process “treats the bike like a sports car for best performance and best look”, Wang smiles confidently.
In response to personalization requirements, “customized coating” is another feature in DARE. “After achieving the best performances, people look for items with a personal touch.” This pursuit to beauty also brings them accolades. “By winning the Golden Pin Design Award again and again, we have won recognitions from designers.” Encouraged by these awards, DARE aims for perfection. Wang also looks forward to coating design and other potential collaborations.
Polish brand values
The past decade certainly presents challenges along the way. “Unlike accessories, we need to take safety, performance, and other aspects into consideration to design bikes. There are many efforts behind the scenes.” As a young brand, Wang admits DARE must do better to communicate its spirits and values. Fortunately in this brand journey, it has received a lot of deals, support, and eventually approvals from customers.
DARE also hopes to contribute to the bike market in Taiwan, “by bringing design and creativity into the industry”. Through consistent quality, collaborations with international cycling teams, and event participation, it builds up brand awareness. “Because of these efforts, we hope consumers will recognize DARE as a confident and sustainable brand.”
Prospects in the post-pandemic world
After the pandemic, the bike industry will benefit from increasing demands. However, raw material shortages worldwide have stopped many brands from taking more orders. While DARE is not exempted from pandemic impacts, Wang remains optimistic about prospects. He continues to negotiate with the bike travel industry and brands for mutual benefits. DARE also plans to launch a new lightweight model this year, and demonstrates impressive development and design capabilities from Taiwan.
