Brimstoner (Sulfuric Fire Fishing) is a hundred-year-old fishing method that has been lost in Taiwan. Fishermen use carbide and water to produce acetylene, which ignites the torch with a boom sound. Because of the phototaxis, Cirrhinus molitorella will jump out the sea and then fishermen can catch them with the dip net.
At present, there are only four Brimstoner fishing boats in Jinshan, Taiwan. In 2014, the Fisheries Administration and the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) applied Brimstoner for World Heritage was unsuccessful. However, in order to continue the culture, they give Brimstoner a brand story and packaging design. The story is a myth of Blue Demon and Red Demon. It describes the clairvoyance and the clairaudient besides the Matsu; they blend the style of tattoo and Ukiyo-e together to highlight Taiwanese fishermen’s brave spirits.
The hidden organ “BOOM-” in the package mimics the sound of torch igniting. People can interact with the Brimstoner and explore the concept of sustainable fisheries and develop Brimstoner from a new way.
