“Neither round / nor square/ whatever the destiny is/ just be yourself and without consideration of rules. ” This is from Design Drawing of Incense Burners written by Yuehu Ding (1829-1879) during the Qing Dynasty. In Chinese, the term rules (guize in the Chinese phonetic alphabet) is composed of two words: gauge (gui) and torque (ze) which are measures to correct rounds and squares, separately, and implies standard regulations.
The pot body blends circles with squares. The cups have circlar upsides and square downsides, suitable for enjoying tea, which echo the shape of the pot as well. Their profiles show “neither round nor square”. The spout is placed on the side, instead of the center according to the traditional way, and symbolizes that the design is without consideration of rules. This implies freedom to be oneself without being burdened by secular societal rules, such as tactfulness and moderation.
