Ziping Community, located in Ziguang District, Kaohsiung, promotes its unique local product, "Lacquerware Crafts," which has been developed through community learning. To offer visitors a distinctive experience beyond tasting local cuisine, the community provides "Lacquerware Lunchboxes." Creating lacquerware requires time, effort, patience, and persistence to produce products that meet market standards. This itself poses a challenge for the local community. When commissioned to design packaging for lacquerware crafts, we chose to collaborate with community residents to find the most suitable form and approach that represents the local characteristics. We transformed the time-consuming and expensive craft into a unique packaging strategy for commemorative gifts. Furthermore, we reconsidered how to infuse local charm with vibrant value by selling the "creators' ideas" as a means of practice.

We used black kraft paper combined with screen printing techniques, utilizing large color blocks to overcome the issue of cracking at the corners of the packaging. This design creates a glossy appearance resembling lacquerware colors applied to black paper. We treated the packaging itself as a concept of lacquerware craftsmanship, designing innovative packaging that conveys the charm of the community and embellishes the local atmosphere. Through this packaging design, we aimed to break free from the predetermined framework set by the city and engage in dialogue, interaction, and communication with local residents. By exploring local perspectives and finding a design language specific to the locality, we hoped to discover the essence of the community.
