SWC is a product designed to protect the growth of shelterbelts, mainly made of Senegalese catechuas in the Sahara Desert of Africa. It blocks the wind from knocking down immature tree trunks and collects a small amount of dew and rain below. When the soil lacks moisture, it diffuses water to provide for tree growth. As the trunk becomes sturdy, the product decomposes back into the soil, as it is made of pruned branches and gum. It can last for about one to two years. The product is coated with bitter oil to reduce pest and disease access and increase seedling growth in the first year. The shelterbelt water collector can reduce weed growth and livestock gnawing, increasing the survival rate of young trees.
