YEZO is a conceptual design for a small retreat, nestled in the northern mountain range of Hokkaido, Japan, that uses this dramatic landscape and an experimental design approach to create a sanctuary in nature. Its lean tectonic system, combined with only a most essential spatial programme, redefines the modern meaning of true luxury: a place for quiet reflection and private enjoyment in a setting defined by wood, stone, water, and light, surrounded by natural beauty.
YEZO’s elegant, fluid space follows a minimalist yet expressive performance-driven material, tectonic, and construction approach. The wooden roof shell structure, clad with regional black slate, consists of glue-laminated (GluLam) timber beams suspended from a central concrete chimney. An engineered wood product, GluLam reduces reliability on less-sustainable growth-dependent solid-sawn timber. YEZO’s curved GluLam beams are carefully shaped to operate in pure tension throughout, resulting in weight- and material reductions of 90% compared to straight beams. Shapes are algorithmically optimised for fabrication from one single mould to minimise ecological impact and reduce manufacturing cost and delivery time.
Colour splash is a playscape that allows for play regardless of weather. When the sun is out, children are bathed in colourful shadows. When it’s pouring, the playground transforms.
Catemaco, a town founded on the shores of a lake, which bears its name, has been characterized from the beginning by a mystical connection filled with legends and providing diverse ways of survival for the inhabitants of the town, taking advantage of fishing and tourism in the present day, putting Catemaco on the map as a town full of ecotourism.
The following project re-imagines the interaction of the town of Catemaco with the lake, allowing the town to improve its economy by taking advantage of and caring for its natural environment.
Catemaco’s Pier Park offers the opportunity to link environmental aspects with urban aspects for the economic improvement of the town using elements typical of the area, vernacular architecture, and natural systems for the purification of water.
As has been learned over the centuries, nature can teach us how to counteract the secondary effects caused by human activity. Catemaco’s Pier Park proposes a series of natural processes that lead to the purification of the coast, imitating the wetland system for the filtration of water into the lake and the elimination of excess contaminants with natural purification systems.
CYCLONE CATCHER
