“Three Suns is the about the sediments of distant places, regret, and freedom that wash up in the sands of time.”Artist Nung-Hsin Hu spent three years compiling this book from rays of sunlight she collected throughout the days spent in the Arctic Circle, Taiwan, and Iceland. Film, video, sculpture, audio, and text are the media she chose to record her adventures and memories of home during an artist residency.

The length of the pages for the three places correspond to the three different daylight lengths, gradually growing longer. The dark-to-light gradient of the grayscale pages represents the duration of night. The local latitude is thermal printed on the side. The long rectangular format has overall dimensions that easily evoke the image of a film strip, and the book is bound with a Swiss binding.

Lenticular printing mounted on the front cover uses the angle of refraction of light to switch between the images of three suns. The enigmatic points of light finally reveal the title of the book: Three Suns. This book is just like the artist, who captured and preserved slices of time. The things we collect on our journey seem like disconnected,
fleeting moments in far off places. That is, until everything comes together in front of our eyes in the present moment.

When readers flip through the book, the different textures on each page and varying printing processes create layers that better integrate the reading experience and the work. On the last page, 24 frames of the sun are captured on a 16mm film strip to ensure that those of us who collect this book will also delight in possessing one second of sunlight from the life of the artist.
